Reach is people. Impressions are times shown. One person can produce many impressions.

Reach counts unique people who saw your content. Impressions count how many times it was displayed. If one person sees your post three times, that is a reach of 1 and 3 impressions — which is why impressions are always equal to or higher than reach, never lower.
The comparison
| Reach | Impressions | |
|---|---|---|
| Counts | Unique people | Total displays |
| Repeat views | Counted once | Counted every time |
| Best for judging | How many people you got to | How often they saw it |
| Can exceed the other | Never | Always can |
What the ratio tells you
Divide impressions by reach and you get the average number of times each person saw the post. Close to 1 means most people saw it once — typical of content distributed to a cold audience. Meaningfully above 1 means people came back, which usually indicates the post was saved, shared, or kept resurfacing in a feed.
It means the platform kept showing your content, or people returned to it. On Reels especially, a ratio well above 1 often indicates rewatching — one of the strongest signals there is.
Which one to optimise for
Reach, almost always. It is the number that corresponds to new people encountering you, and it is what growth means in practice. Impressions rise on their own when content holds attention; chasing impressions directly usually means showing the same content to the same people more often.
Related questions
Which is better to have?
Higher reach means more distinct people. Higher impressions relative to reach means the people you got were more engaged. They answer different questions.
Can reach be higher than impressions?
No. Every person reached generates at least one impression, so impressions are always at least equal to reach.
Does buying impressions help?
Rarely, and it can hurt — adding impressions without engagement lowers the ratio the algorithm ranks on.
The engagement rate calculator covers the metric that follows from these two.
