SoundCloud is where most independent music still starts, and it is one of the few platforms where the play count sits directly under the waveform, in front of every listener, before they press anything. A track with 43 plays and a track with 43,000 plays get judged differently by the same person in the same second.

The ratio that gives it away
SoundCloud shows plays, likes, reposts and comments on the same track page, side by side. That makes the relationship between them readable at a glance in a way it is not on most platforms.
A track with 80,000 plays and 12 likes is not a track anybody listened to. Real tracks land somewhere around one to three percent likes against plays, with reposts well below likes and comments below that. Order to that shape, not to whichever number is cheapest.
This is the single most common mistake on SoundCloud. Plays are cheap, so people buy plays alone, and the resulting profile reads worse than one with honest low numbers — because the imbalance is visible on the page.
Reposts are the only real distribution
SoundCloud has no recommendation feed that behaves like TikTok. Tracks travel because somebody reposted them into their followers stream. That makes reposts the closest thing to reach on the platform, and it is why they cost more than plays.
